Alex Macgregor has been crafting wines for Saracina in Mendocino for years, and makes a few hundred cases under his own label – a terrific Petite Sirah and Carignane sourced from a single, dry-farmed, organic vineyard, as well as a vibrant Dry Muscat, all from Mendocino. The Petite shows classic aromatics and structure, enhanced by a hot post-fermentation maceration which lends refined and supple tannins. The Carignane was planted in the 1950s and is aged in not a single barrel of new oak, but does spend a few luxurious days on top of the Petite skins for enhancement. Alex makes less than 500 cases total across all three wines, and they are enjoyed by many, but far too few.
